高徳院（鎌倉）/ Kotokuin temple (Great Buddha) in Kamakura
鎌倉長谷にある「高徳院」の「鎌倉大仏」、間近でみると大きい。/ The “Great Buddha of Kamakura” of “Kotokuin” in Hase, Kamakura is very large at close range.
「高徳院」（HP）に以前来たのは何年前だろう。先回は、子供が小さい時だった気がする。回数としては3回目と思う。

まあ、兎に角、久しぶりの「鎌倉大仏」観光です。

■参道と仁王門 / Approach and Nio Gate
江の島電鉄（江ノ電）の長谷駅から、徒歩6分に入り口がある。天気予報に反していい天気になったので出足が悪いのか、まだコロナ禍で自粛なのか、「鎌倉大仏」のある「高徳院」でも、このように人の写らない写真を撮ることができます。（多少タイミングを取りますが。。。）
From Hase Station of Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden), there is a 6-minute walk to the Kotokuin temple’s entrance. You can take a picture of no person like this at “Kotokuin temple” with “Kamakura Great Buddha”, the reasons are whether the weather was good against the weather forecast, or you’re still self-restrained against the corona virus.
「仁王門」です。なかなか迫力のある仁王が門の両側に立っています。門を潜って進みます。
It is “Niomon”, Nio gate. The powerful Nios stand on both sides of the gate. Go through the gate.
左手に、売店があります。「お土産、特売だよ」との掛け声。どうやら、修学旅行生をあてに、お土産を多く仕入れていたのだが、コロナ禍でキャンセルになり、お土産が全く売れなくなり、値引きしているようです。
There is a gift shop on your left. “Souvenirs are a special sale,” shoppers exclaimed. Apparently, they were preparing a lot of souvenirs for school excursion students, but it was canceled due to Corona virus, so it seems that the souvenirs are not sold at all and it is discounted.
その先に、券売所があります。

■鎌倉大仏の生い立ち / Birth of Great Buddha of Kamakura
券売所を抜けると、少し曲がると、広い境内が広がり、「鎌倉大仏」が鎮座してます。以前来た時には、大仏の周辺には、人がごった返していたので、やはり人が少ないです。
After going through the ticket office, turning a little, the wide precincts spread out and the “Great Buddha of Kamakura” sits there. When I came before, there were a lot of people around the Great Buddha, so there were few people.
「鎌倉大仏」の正式名、国宝銅造阿弥陀如来坐像は、高徳院の本尊です。
The official name of “Great Buddha of Kamakura,” the national treasure, the copper statue of Amida Nyorai, is the principal image of Kotokuin Temple.
一般的に、寺院は、開基（創立者）と開山（初代住職）は分かっていることが多いと思うのですが、「高徳院」はともに不詳とのことです。
Generally, I think that most of the temples know founder and first priest, but both of them are unknown for Kotokuin temple.
宗派も、諸説あるようですが、真言宗→臨済宗→浄土宗と変遷があるようです。
The sect seems to have various theories, but it seems that there is a transition from Shingon sect to Rinzai sect to Jodo sect.
鎌倉大仏は、1252年から約10年の月日をかけて建立されたとされています。元々は、大仏の周囲には仏殿があったようですが、1334年、1369年にの大風で損壊してしまったらしいです。
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is said to have been built between 1252 and 1262. Originally, there seems to be a Buddhist temple (house) around the Great Buddha, but it seems that it was destroyed by the great wind in 1334 and 1369.
Wikiによると、姿は、鎌倉期に流行した「宋風」の仏像の特色を持ち、角張った平面的な面相、低い肉髻（にっけい、頭髪部の椀状の盛り上がり）、猫背気味の姿勢、体部に比して頭部が大きい点などがあるそうです。また、造像当初は表面に金箔を貼っていたとされており、現在でも右頬に金箔の跡が確認できるそうです。
According to the Wiki, the figure has the characteristics of a Buddhist image of “Song style (China)” that was popular in the Kamakura period, with an angular flat surface, low the top of the head (called “nikkei”, bowl-shaped bulge on the hair), a stoopy posture, It seems that the head is larger than the body. Also, it is said that gold leaf was pasted on the surface at the beginning of the image formation, and even now it seems that the trace of gold leaf can be seen on the right cheek only.
■鎌倉大仏の高さ（奈良の大仏との比較） / Height of Great Buddha of Kamakura and Nara
奈良の大仏が約14.7mに対して、鎌倉の大仏は、約13.4m（台座含む）、約11.3m（仏身高）、重量約121トンと言われています。比較は、14.7mと11.3mだと思うので、鎌倉大仏は、奈良の大仏より約3.4m低いことになります。
The Great Buddha in Nara is about 14.7 m, while the Great Buddha in Kamakura is said to be about 13.4 m (including the pedestal), about 11.3 m (Buddha height) and weigh about 121 tons. I think the comparison is 14.7m and 11.3m, so the Kamakura Buddha is about 3.4m lower than the Nara’s one.
数十年前に初めて来たときには、鎌倉の大仏はもっと小さいというイメージでしたが、実物を見ると、結構大きいので、その意外さに驚いたのを覚えています。初めて見る方は、同じように思われるのではないでしょうか。
When I first came a few decades ago, I had the image that the Great Buddha in Kamakura was smaller, but when I saw the real thing, it was quite large, so I was surprised at it. Those who see it for the first time may think the same.
とにかく、近くから見上げると迫力満点です。

鎌倉大仏の背中です。通気用の窓が開いています。これは、コロナ対策ではなく、以前来た時も空いていたので、空洞の中に風を通しているだけだと思います。銅製（金属）なので、日に当たるとかなりの熱を持つからではないでしょうか？
It is the back of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Windows for ventilation are open. This is not a countermeasure against corona virus, it was opened when I came before, so I think that it is just blowing air into the cavity. Because it is made of copper (metal), it may have considerable heat when exposed to the sun.
先回は、20円払うと、鎌倉大仏の胎内に入ることができましたが、これは、コロナ対策で入ることができませんでした。
Last time, if I paid 20 yen, I was able to enter the womb of the Great Buddha of Kamakura, but I could not enter due to corona measures.
こちらは、鎌倉大仏の草履です。片足の幅90㎝、長さ180㎝、重さ約45㎏。流石に大きいですね。
This is the sandals of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. The width of one leg is 90cm, the length is 180cm, and the weight is about 45kg. It’s really big.
■観月堂と与謝野晶子の歌碑 / Kangetsudo and Akiko Yosano’s Song Monument
鎌倉大仏の左右背面を取り囲んでいる建物（事務所、御朱印所、売店、休憩所など）の、鎌倉大仏の背面側の向こうには、静かな庭園があります。
There is a quiet garden behind the back of Kamakura Buddha in the buildings (offices, Gosyuin stamp offices, shops, rest areas, etc.) surrounding the left and right back of Kamakura Buddha.
「観月堂」です。もともとソウルの王宮の観月台の一屋が、東京目黒の驪山荘に移築された。1939年、ここの再移築された。
It is “Kangetsudo”. Originally, a member of the royal palace’s Kangetsudai in Soul of Korea was relocated to “Rizanso” in Meguro ward, Tokyo. It was relocated here in 1939.
もう一つは、与謝野晶子が鎌倉大仏を詠んだ歌が記されています。
The other is the monument of the song that Akiko Yosano wrote about the Great Buddha of Kamakura.

■まとめ / Summary
久しぶりの「鎌倉大仏」でした。コロナの影響で、胎内には入れませんでしたが、以前の雰囲気から大きく変わりませんでした。
It was the “Great Buddha of Kamakura” after a long absence. Due to the influence of corona, I could not put it in the womb, but it did not change much from the previous atmosphere.
今回の本当の狙いは、「鎌倉大仏」ではなく、「高徳院」自体でした。「鎌倉大仏」の境内から出た後、一旦、長谷駅の方に少し戻り、そこからぐるっと回って、「高徳院」の横まで行きました。
This time, the true aim was not “Kamakura Buddha” but “Kotokuin temple” itself. After leaving the precincts of “Great Buddha of Kamakura”, I returned to Hase Station for a while, then went around and went to the side of “Kotokuin temple”.
しかし、2mくらいの高い塀がずっと設置されていて、全く中を伺うことができませんでした。心残りです。
